A lawyer challenging provisions of New York's new gun law argued that the state restricts people from carrying weapons in too many places, telling a federal judge Thursday the rules affect not only people on busy Manhattan streets but an upstate pastor on his church's property.

The argument was made during a hearing before Judge Glenn Suddaby in Syracuse as he decides whether to temporarily order a hold on provisions of the law while the federal challenge to its constitutionality continues.

Rewards totaling $85,000 have been offered for information leading to an arrest in five fatal shootings since July in Stockton, California, that investigators believe are related. The police chief says after reviewing surveillance footage, detectives have located an unidentified “person of interest." Police released a grainy still image of an individual filmed from behind, dressed all in black. The latest killing occurred shortly before 2 a.m. last Tuesday when a 54-year-old man was shot to death in a residential area just north of downtown. Police say he was the fifth man fatally shot since July 8 within a radius of a few square miles.

Crowds of people have marched in Paris to show their support for Iranian protesters standing up to their leadership over the death of a young woman in police custody. French feminist groups, leading politicians and people of Iranian heritage were among those who joined the march Sunday through eastern Paris. “Woman, Life, Liberty!” many in the crowd chanted. It was the latest and among the largest of several protests in France in support of the Iranian demonstrators. Iranians and others have also marched in cities around the world over the death of Mahsa Amini and the treatment of women and wider repression in Iran.

Authorities say a helicopter spun out of control and crashed in the front yard of a home in central California, hurting a pilot and passenger. Police say the helicopter clipped the edge of the house and sheared off the top of a palm tree before crashing and coming to rest on its side in southeast Fresno around 10 a.m. Saturday. Two men aboard, the 47-year-old pilot and a 33-year-old passenger, were hospitalized with minor injuries. Nobody on the ground was hurt. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.

Valentino’s fashion show in Paris saw black cars snared for blocks dropping off battalions of celebrities who, amid the commotion, just couldn’t find the entrance. Seated VIP guests were sweatily crammed in together Sunday inside the Le Marais’ Carreau du Temple venue as the show started an hour late. Outside, screaming members of the public braved the rain for hours to glimpse their favorite stars. The fever pitch was reminiscent of the French capital's pre-pandemic fashion scene. The Valentino show explored inside-out or back-to-front themes, with one beautiful nude skin-like top with matching nude pants speckled with diaphanous plumes.

Libya’s Missing Persons Authority has announced the discovery of some 42 bodies buried in a former stronghold of the ousted Islamic State group. The bodies were exhumed from a mass grave following a "tip off" from an investigation conducted with incarcerated Islamic State fighters. Sirte fell under Islamic State control between 2015 and 2016, as the extremist group sought to profit from the chaos that has long engulfed the oil-rich country. Samples of the corpses' blood, teeth and bones have been collected to identify the missing victims. Several mass graves have been uncovered across Libya in recent years. The country was plunged into turmoil after a NATO-backed uprising toppled and killed longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi in 2011.

Dallas Cowboys receiver Michael Gallup is active and set for his season debut against Washington, nine months after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Gallup was injured on a touchdown catch against Arizona on Jan. 2 in Week 17 last season. The Cowboys kept him off injured reserve to start the season in hopes he could play within four games. He hit that target. The return of Gallup provides an option behind CeeDee Lamb.

An Israeli rights group says Israel is holding nearly 800 Palestinians without trial or charge, the highest number since 2008. HaMoked, which regularly gathers figures from Israeli prison authorities, said Sunday that 798 Palestinians are currently being held in so-called administrative detention. Under the practice, prisoners can be held for months, do not know the charges against them and are not granted access to the evidence against them. The group said the number of those held in administrative detention has risen steadily this year, as Israel conducts nightly arrest raids in the occupied West Bank in response to a spate of attacks against Israelis earlier this year.

Moviegoing audiences kicked off the month of October with a horror movie. Studio estimates Sunday show Paramount’s “Smile” easily topped the North American charts with $22 million in ticket sales and left Universal’s rom-com “Bros” in the dust. Billy Eichner’s high-profile but modestly budgeted “Bros” launched with an estimated $4.8 million to take fourth place behind “Don’t Worry Darling” and “The Woman King.” But opening weekends likely aren’t the final word on either film. Horror movie audiences are generally front-loaded. “Bros" got great reviews and an A CinemaScore. That suggests strong word-of-mouth potential that could allow it to continue finding audiences through the fall.

Play was briefly suspended in a French league soccer game after tear gas coming from the stands left some players struggling to breathe. Host Toulouse was leading Montpellier 4-1 when play was stopped in the second half and the referee decided to send players back to the locker room. The game resumed after an interruption of about 15 minutes and ended in a 4-2 victory for Toulouse. Crowd trouble has been a concern in the French league this weekend. France’s interior ministry banned Nice supporters from attending the game at Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday and even from visiting the French capital. Fan violence often marred French soccer last season.

A scheme to kidnap Michigan’s governor in 2020 will get yet another airing in court. Three men face trial Monday in Jackson County, Michigan, just weeks before voters consider whether to reelect Gretchen Whitmer to a second term. Fourteen men were arrested in 2020. One of them said the kidnapping might inspire a civil war known as the “boogaloo.” Federal prosecutors focused on six people who were considered to be key players, while Michigan authorities dealt with the rest. Joe Morrison, Pete Musico and Paul Bellar are charged with providing material support for terrorist acts. They’re accused of forming an alliance with others through their paramilitary group, the Wolverine Watchmen. Defense lawyers say the three cut ties before the kidnapping plot accelerated in summer 2020.

Erling Haaland and Phil Foden scored hat tricks as Erik ten Hag was humiliated in his first Manchester derby. Manchester City destroyed rival Manchester United 6-3 at the Etihad and moved to within a point of Premier League leader Arsenal. It was Haaland’s third hat trick of the season and his third in successive home league games. Ten Hag becomes the sixth United manager since Alex Ferguson’s retirement to lose his first derby but had a heavier defeat than either David Moyes or Ralf Rangnick, who both lost by margins of 4-1.

The Gladiolus Food Pantry usually hands out supplies on Wednesdays to about 240 families. But when Hurricane Ian swept through last week it canceled their distribution and laid waste to much of their supplies. Food bank founder and director Miriam Ortiz couldn't even get out of her nearby house the day after Ian because of the floodwaters. Over the weekend, she and volunteers were cleaning up while people from around the region were dropping off food and other supplies to donate to families in need. Ortiz says many of the people the pantry serves were already struggling with rising rents and inflation before the hurricane hit.

Minnesota Vikings rookie Lewis Cine was carted off the field with a leg injury late in the first quarter against the New Orleans Saints in London. The 32nd pick overall in last spring’s NFL draft out of Georgia was blocking on a punt return when he sustained the injury. Cine clutched his left leg as he went down. Players from both teams took a knee as medical professionals stabilized Cine’s lower left leg and put him on a cart to leave the field. The Vikings immediately ruled him out.

PHILADELPHIA — A local Republican Party in Southwestern Pennsylvania has a quote attributed to Samuel Adams on its website: “It does not take a majority to prevail … but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men.”

The heads of nine central and eastern European NATO members issued a joint statement backing a path to membership for Ukraine in the U.S.-led security alliance. They also called on all 30 NATO nations to ramp up military aid for Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a surprise move Friday to apply for fast-track NATO membership, in response to Russia’s annexation of four regions of Ukraine. NATO membership needs approval from all 30 members and Ukraine is unlikely to join anytime soon. Being a country already at war complicates the request.

A Wisconsin man accused of killing six people and injuring dozens more when he allegedly drove his SUV through a Christmas parade in suburban Milwaukee last year is set to go on trial Monday. Darrell Brooks faces nearly 80 charges in the 2021 disaster in Waukesha. Prosecutors promised to present extensive video of the SUV plowing through the crowd, and the trial had looked like a straightforward proceeding. But the judge last week allowed Brooks to represent himself. Brooks has no legal training but will get the opportunity to cross-examine victims, police officers and anyone else who testifies. Legal experts warn it could quickly become chaotic and painful for witnesses.

LOS ANGELES — Nearly $150 million worth of federal grants to the three main housing agencies working to reduce homelessness in Greater Los Angeles went unspent between 2015 and 2020, as the number of unhoused people soared.

For months, Oak Glen, California, resident Meg Grant emailed pleas to local officials: Residents needed help preparing for the next rainstorm.
